Category: Appetizer/Side

The term “appetizers” for me encompasses everything from starters to side dishes. These may be distinct categories on a typical menu. However, when you look at it, there aren’t really that many differences between the two. And the terms ar3 often be used interchangeably.

If you have French fries or cheese curds before the meal, it’s an appetizer. But does that mean that you can’t also have them on the side of an entrée with a burger or fish fry?

Whether something is a starter or a side dish is largely arbitrary. And mostly determined more by when you eat something. Rather than what you’re eating.

Thus, I have bundled starters and side dishes into the same category. I leave it up to you to determine where exactly in the course you want to place your appetizers!

Enchilada Sauce w/ Thai Chilis & Red Onion

December 30, 2021

It is officially fall. Frost is absolutely in the air. It’s actually the day after Halloween. Which means that any day now it’s going to snow and it may officially be Christmas season. But it also means that I have to use up all of […]

Potluck Enchilada Sauce w/ Thai Chilis

December 23, 2021

I have an enormous amount of Thai chilis still ripening in November. I brought a couple of the plants inside to try and winter over. But the most prolific of the Thai chilis just is not thriving in the transition! Which is no worry, I […]

Potluck Avocado Dip w/ Greek Yogurt & Pecans

December 16, 2021

Holiday season is upon us. I was perusing holiday isles in Costco, absolutely picking up some more socks and debating about a case of canned pumpkin purée for pet food… But then I came across the pecans. Now, pecans are well known for being caramelized […]

Slow Cooker Black Beans w/ Bananas & Thai Chilis

December 16, 2021

I have a bunch of bananas. My local grocery store likes to sell them for pennies when they even begin to spoil. There’s a whole heath food section in the produce department for slightly overripe things to feed children that they are practically giving away! […]

Spinach Pesto w/ Greek Yogurt, Wine, & Gruyère

December 12, 2021

I am always a fan of pesto substitutes. I’m allergic to basil and haven’t been able to have pesto in many, many years. Although I do remember it fondly back when I was a child and it was slightly less hazardous to my system! Spinach […]

Baked Brie w/ Puff Pastry

December 2, 2021

My entire reason for attempting to make puff pastry today is to make puff pastry with baked brie. I’d never made puff pastry before. I’d always heard that it was incredibly daunting and tedious to make. More than anything, most people seem to recommend against […]

The Fundamentals of Puff Pastry

December 1, 2021

I have never heard good things about making puff pastry. Everyone I know who has tried has simply given up and bought it. But, living in the middle of nowhere Wisconsin? I cannot for the life of me find anywhere that actually sells it! It’s […]

Roasted Blue Hubbard Squash Seeds

November 28, 2021

This may have more seeds per pound than any other squash or pumpkin that I have roasted for eating purposes. They’re bigger and meatier than most squash seeds. Ending up with a kind of bitter flavor profile. Partially because they do take so much longer […]

Roasted Blue Hubbard Squash

November 28, 2021

I didn’t even go to the grocery store for squash. I was meeting up with a friend in the area, so a quick jaunt to run errands turned into a whole day of activities. But I did, what most people do when they are at […]

Rice Cooker Sushi Rice

November 25, 2021

I was pretty sure that I had sushi rice and nori. It’s one of those things that I always think about making, but never quite actually end up doing. So, in the spirit of following through on trivial life goals, I am going to make […]

Top 5 Overrated Kitchen Gadgets NOT Worth Buying

Top 5 Overrated Kitchen Gadgets NOT Worth Buying

I hear what you're saying. The holidays are upon us. The overpriced culinary gadgets are finally on sale. But put down that copper pot. Step away from the Vitamix. And rethink that Instant Pot. Your counter space is too precious to spend that much money on things that you'll probably never use! Although, I do have some more useful recommendation, if you still think that you might want an all-purpose cooking contraption or fancy 19th century kitchen. Plus, nothing on this blog is sponsored. I just don't like it when people waste money on cooking fads. NAME ONE PERSON WHO ACTUALLY USES AN AT-HOME PRESSURE COOKER.
