Category: Appetizer/Side

The term “appetizers” for me encompasses everything from starters to side dishes. These may be distinct categories on a typical menu. However, when you look at it, there aren’t really that many differences between the two. And the terms ar3 often be used interchangeably.

If you have French fries or cheese curds before the meal, it’s an appetizer. But does that mean that you can’t also have them on the side of an entrée with a burger or fish fry?

Whether something is a starter or a side dish is largely arbitrary. And mostly determined more by when you eat something. Rather than what you’re eating.

Thus, I have bundled starters and side dishes into the same category. I leave it up to you to determine where exactly in the course you want to place your appetizers!

Slow Cooker No-fry Refried Pinto Beans w/ Carolina Reapers

January 18, 2024

I’ve been in a rice and beans mood lately. They’re both really great quick and easy recipes that you can toss together on the go. I like to start a batch of beans in the morning before I go to work or at night right […]

Shepherd’s Pie w/ Pinto Beans, Mexican Rice, & Mashed Potatoes

January 14, 2024

I made Slow Cooker Pinto Beans w/ Carolina Reapers and Mexican Rice w/ Cayenne Peppers & Bay Leaves the other day. And I’ve been staring at them in the refrigerator going… “Do you think that this would be good with mashed potatoes??” But it’s also fall, […]

Slow Cooker Pinto Beans w/ Carolina Reapers

January 11, 2024

I’ve just brought most of my plants in for winter. They’re still producing fruit. A couple of the plants are actually producing a lot of fruit. Right now I have an abundance of Carolina reapers. There’s always a chance for cross-pollination among peppers, so you […]

No-knead Dutch Oven Bread w/ Cocoa Powder & Chocolate Chips

December 31, 2023

The other day I made Chocolate Bread for a little Halloweeny ladies brunch. I found an article on substituting 10% flour for cocoa powder in bread recipes (King Arthur Baking Company’s How to Give Any Bread a Chocolate Makeover). Which worked out really well! So, […]

Quinoa w/ Sweet Potatoes, Spinach, & Garlic

December 24, 2023

I’ve been making a lot of really big meals lately. I’ve been in kind of a cooking rut this summer. Although that does tend to happen when things get busy and I don’t have the time and/or the energy to come home from a long […]

No-knead Dutch Oven Chocolate Bread w/ Cocoa Powder

December 21, 2023

Halloween is coming up and I’ve been trying to come up with something vaguely Halloween themed for ladies brunch. This might be an excuse to make a giant cheese board and day drink, but we do also craft some of the time! I also usually […]

Roasted Garlic Sauce w/ Extra Virgin Olive Oil

November 26, 2023

I’m a big fan of roasted garlic. There’s nothing better in the winter than the scent of freshly roasted garlic. Especially when it’s snowing outside and the oven is nice and toasty warm. It’s not quite winter yet, but I’m getting in the fall and […]

I’m endeavoring to make Pizza with every kind of roasted fruit and vegetable that I can muster. Today, that’s Roasted Kuri Squash Slices, Roasted Autumn Crisp Apple Slices, Roasted Garlic, Roasted Kuri Squash Seeds, and Roasted Shallots. I wouldn’t ordinarily cook shallots in this way. […]

Roasted Autumn Crisp Apple Slices

I have just gone apple picking for the first time in my life. It was a gorgeous day. It was a fun time before the rain and the snow kick in for the arctic tundra that is inevitably going to be a Midwestern winter. I […]

Fall is in the air. And you know what that means? It’s squash seed season. Now, I know what you might be thinking: It’s squash eating season, isn’t it? And yes, you are correct. But you know what I love more than the squash itself? […]

Top 5 Overrated Kitchen Gadgets NOT Worth Buying

Top 5 Overrated Kitchen Gadgets NOT Worth Buying

I hear what you're saying. The holidays are upon us. The overpriced culinary gadgets are finally on sale. But put down that copper pot. Step away from the Vitamix. And rethink that Instant Pot. Your counter space is too precious to spend that much money on things that you'll probably never use! Although, I do have some more useful recommendation, if you still think that you might want an all-purpose cooking contraption or fancy 19th century kitchen. Plus, nothing on this blog is sponsored. I just don't like it when people waste money on cooking fads. NAME ONE PERSON WHO ACTUALLY USES AN AT-HOME PRESSURE COOKER.
