Articles for day in the life of Catfish Out of Water. Everything from my personal everyday adventures. To keeping plants and animals alive. And practical advice for everyday cuisine and fine dining.

A lot of people use food and lifestyle blogs to put their best food forward. It’s tantamount to food porn. It’s idealized and oftentimes a Photoshopped renditions of the world. But it isn’t entirely reality.

I use this Articles section of the blog to talk about the real struggles with food and gardening. I talk about the dishes that are important to me. And the origin of food and how that shapes my perspectives on it.

But more than anything, I utilize this section to chronicle my life. To share my experiences with growing fruits and vegetables, oftentimes in a minimal space without a yard. As well as my life and cooking in and around having a full-time job and a home filled with pets. And in terms of my relationship with food, from where it began to where it can go.

The Fundamentals of Making Nachos

July 15, 2021

Nachos are one of my guilty pleasures. I’m almost embarrassed about making them. A lasagna isn’t healthy for you. It may have some tomatoes in it and cudos for eating fruit in something. But let’s be real: lasagna isn’t a health food by any stretch […]

The Fundamentals of Avocado & Greek Yogurt Dip

July 1, 2021

I’m incredibly fond of making avocado dip. It’s my absolute favorite thing this summer. I put it on everything from burritos and nachos to seafood and salads. Late at night I’ll even just dip chips in it as a quick snack! There is truly nothing […]

The Fundamentals of Blackened Tilapia

June 15, 2021

I am a big fan of blackened tilapia. I would wager to say that it’s one of the easier fish to cook. Tilapia are so small compared to something like salmon or even whole cod, that there isn’t a lot of guess work in cooking […]

The Fundamentals of Making Hummus

June 1, 2021

I am a huge fan of hummus. It’s easy to make from scratch and infinitely more delicious than store bought varieties. It’s difficult to make a hummus recipe, though, without contemplating: chickpeas or garbanzo beans? These are, in fact, different words for the exact same […]

The Fundamentals of Crustless Quiche

May 15, 2021

It has recently come to my attention that I have been making hoards of crustless quiche lately. Not that I’m not necessarily always a fan of quiche. But I have been buying eggs in bulk and it’s hard not to think of quiche when I […]

The Fundamentals of Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries

May 1, 2021

I am a big fan of air fryer sweet potato fries. It only takes about 15 minutes. And it’s a lot easier and more contained than getting out a sheet pan and trying to make them in the oven or the hassle of a deep […]

The Fundamentals of No-knead Dutch Oven Bread

April 1, 2021

I have been trying and trying and trying to make Ciabatta Bread! Somehow ended up starting okay at it and then getting progressively worse… Not exactly the point of this adventure! But finally I gave up and decided to just make plain old white bread. […]

The Fundamentals of Preserving Fresh Turmeric

March 15, 2021

I absolutely adore turmeric. It only grows in tropical climates and you can almost never find it in grocery stores! But, when I do, I buy it in bulk. Usually because that’s the only way that you can buy it. But what exactly do you […]

The Fundamentals of Making Tzatziki

March 1, 2021

I don’t always make tzatziki with English cucumbers, but it has become my go-to lately. You can easily substitute conventional American slicing cucumbers, but all of my usual grocery stores have switched to English ones! I often end up with odd ingredients when I go […]

Top 5 Overrated Kitchen Gadgets NOT Worth Buying

Top 5 Overrated Kitchen Gadgets NOT Worth Buying

I hear what you're saying. The holidays are upon us. The overpriced culinary gadgets are finally on sale. But put down that copper pot. Step away from the Vitamix. And rethink that Instant Pot. Your counter space is too precious to spend that much money on things that you'll probably never use! Although, I do have some more useful recommendation, if you still think that you might want an all-purpose cooking contraption or fancy 19th century kitchen. Plus, nothing on this blog is sponsored. I just don't like it when people waste money on cooking fads. NAME ONE PERSON WHO ACTUALLY USES AN AT-HOME PRESSURE COOKER.
