Tartar Sauce w/ Greek Yogurt, Shallots, & Garlic
I'm not a big fan of mayonnaise. I make quite a few recipes without it. A lot of the time you can just omit the mayonnaise entirely and not really miss a beat. But, mayonnaise is a critical ingredient of tartar sauce! Without it you're really just left with a bunch of minced up pickles and garlic. Which, as appetizing as that sounds, is not exactly something that I want to slather on a burger or dip a fish fry into! If I can't just forgo the mayonnaise, one of my go-tos is to swap it out for Greek yogurt. They're both a white dairy product with similar consistencies. One is just full of quite a bit more probiotics than modified corn starch and hydrogenated soybean oil. So, today I have mayonnaise-free tartar sauce with Greek yogurt.
Now, the taste is quite similar. You can absolutely tell that it is not made of mayonnaise because Greek yogurt does have a distinct flavor to it. But, if you like Greek yogurt, it's an incredibly good substitute. The acidity in the pickles and the lemons pair quite well with the slight bitterness of the Greek yogurt.
I highly recommend that you let the ingredients settle for a day ahead of time, though. It can easily be made in a pinch and eaten as is. But this helps the flavors permeate through the Greek yogurt and have more of a classic tartar sauce flavor.

What to Make w/ Greek Yogurt Tartar Sauce
I made this particular version of mayonnaise-free tartar sauce to slather on top of burgers. I don't tend to eat that much meat. But, when I do, I absolutely adore a salmon burger! They're just as easy to make as beef burgers. Not actually that much more expensive, especially when you can get a good deal for salmon that's on sale. And just delicious with tartar sauce! Since I cannot justify eating that much mayonnaise, and it really doesn't sit well in my gastrointestinal system, this mayonnaise-free version really hits the spot.
Tartar Sauce w/ Greek Yogurt, Shallots, & Garlic
Ingredients
- 1 c. dill pickles minced
- 1/4 shallot minced
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 lemon juiced
- 1 c. Greek yogurt
- dash salt
- dash pepper
Instructions
- Mince all of the produce and mix all of the ingredients together. It's that simple! Just mix and voila! It can help to mix all of the wet ingredients first and then stir in the pickles and shallot. But this is all personal preference.
- I would highly recommend letting this refrigerate for a day to let all of the ingredients settle, though. The Greek yogurt has such a strong flavor on its own, that it takes a little while for the more subtle flavors to seep in. Just make sure not to over spice if you're letting it sit as the spices will permeate and become more pronounced over time!
