This Greek Yogurt Tartar Sauce without mayonnaise is made with dill pickles, shallots, garlic, lemon juice, and just a dash of salt and pepper. It's the perfect way to make a nice, refreshing summer dish without all the guilt of consuming copious amounts of mayonnaise! You can use as much mayo as you want. It's certainly the more typical way to make tartar sauce. Although I'm not from the Midwest and like to reserve my mayonnaise intake for special occasions. The slight tartness to tartar sauce also gives it a flavor combination with the acidity in the freshly squeezed lemons. It's bright and refreshing without overwhelming to the palette. I don't even really like pickles. But I scour the grocery store for good pickles just to make this tartar sauce.
Mince all of the produce and mix all of the ingredients together. It's that simple! Just mix and voila! It can help to mix all of the wet ingredients first and then stir in the pickles and shallot. But this is all personal preference.
I would highly recommend letting this refrigerate for a day to let all of the ingredients settle, though. The Greek yogurt has such a strong flavor on its own, that it takes a little while for the more subtle flavors to seep in. Just make sure not to over spice if you're letting it sit as the spices will permeate and become more pronounced over time!
