Trying to figure out what to make? Or maybe just some inspiration before going to the grocery store? This Recipes section chronicles everything that I make on a daily basis. The good, the not-quite-so-good, and the sheer and utter failures! I’m joking, of course. There are very few catastrophic failures that cannot be remedied with the right skill, coaching, and presence of good family, friends, pets, and compost bins! But, nevertheless. Cooking is about perseverance and having fun with it.

I’m constantly in search of a new and interesting recipes to make. Even a brief perusal of this Recipes section will give anyone an idea of how much I cook. After a 10, 11 hour shift at work cooking for other people all day? The first thing that I want to do when I get home, my feet aching on concrete floors and my entire body smelling of other people’s food and my own blood, sweat, and tears? Is not to put my feet up and relax! But to crank up the music in my kitchen, pour myself a glass of sauvignon blanc, and start slow cooking a curry! Or make macaroni and cheese from scratch. Or melting cheese all over every single leftover that I have in my fridge in a big plate of nachos.

It’s really why I started this blog. I wanted some way to chronicle my culinary endeavors and preserve them for future reference. After all, if I don’t write down what I did, why I did it, and take pictures for posterity’s sake? I will absolutely never be able to recreate it again. And, if I’m going to go to that much effort just to be able to recreate something that I made in the middle of the night after cracking into a bottle of wine? Maybe you can find some inspiration in it, too.

Part of the point of cooking is to have a community. And my motto is always, if you have to eat? You might as well eat well! So, I hope that this Recipes section can provide some of that community. And inspiration to cook to anyone beyond myself. My eternal desire is not to fall into complacency or boredom. So, if in any way my eternally expanding Recipes section is of any value to anyone beyond myself? I wish you all of the best luck!

Burrito w/ Black Lentils, Avocado, & Runny Egg

February 28, 2021

If you want to debate the merits of an Ethiopian lentil burrito? I have already done that! In the previous iteration of this burrito. Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way and you trust me that the two flavor profiles are indeed compatible, […]

Burrito w/ Black Lentils & Sautéed Spinach

February 28, 2021

Combining Ethiopian-inspired flavors with a burrito is might not be on every Mexican food menu. Or, well, let’s be honest here, any menu that I have ever seen or heard of… ever!?? But that doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be! And this black lentil burrito […]

Nachos w/ Ethiopian Lentils & Sautéed Spinach

February 25, 2021

I’m never entirely sure if I’m going to post nachos. Nachos are my cheat meal. They’re what I make tired at the end of the day after work. Probably in the dark in the middle of the night! They’re not necessarily something that I’m proud […]

Burrito w/ Black Lentils, Eggs, & Bananas

February 25, 2021

Step aside Canadian bacon and pineapple. Ethiopian black lentils and bananas are my sweet and savory obsession this week! I know that this might sound like a rather bizarre combination, but really we do things like this all of the time. Sweet and savory elements […]

Salad w/ Black Lentils, Hardboiled Eggs, & Tomatoes

February 21, 2021

This black lentil salad recipe is an amalgam of cooking dilemmas or curiosities. I was thinking about making a vegetarian Doro Wat. Doro Wat is an Ethiopian chicken stew with hardboiled eggs, berbere, niter kibbeh (spiced clarified butter), and sometimes tomato paste. Which isn’t quite […]

Black Lentils w/ Ginger & Turmeric

February 21, 2021

I have had quite a difficult time finding good bulk lentils. Especially in rural Wisconsin. So, I’ve been slowly going through them until there is almost nothing left! And I have finally reached the end of my pantry and must do something with the black […]

Burrito w/ Ethiopian Lentils & Runny Egg

February 18, 2021

This is another one of those meals that isn’t as far fetched as it seems! Ethiopian red lentils and sautéed spinach are often eaten with injera, a flatbread that is made out of teff. To someone who’s never seen it before, injera vaguely resembles a […]

Salad w/ Wine Poached Salmon, Lentils, & Spinach

February 14, 2021

Ethiopian salmon is far from a traditional meal. Salmon are more commonly found in the North Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. And certainly aren’t as widely associated with a landlocked country in the horn of Africa! But I grew up in Oregon and first found a […]

Salad w/ Ethiopian Lentils & Sautéed Spinach

February 14, 2021

I very much enjoy a traditional Ethiopian plate. It’s great to get everyone together over a communal group of dishes and injera. Injera is an Ethiopian flatbread made out of teff. You tend to eat it with your hands and rip off pieces of injera […]

Top 5 Overrated Kitchen Gadgets NOT Worth Buying

Top 5 Overrated Kitchen Gadgets NOT Worth Buying

I hear what you're saying. The holidays are upon us. The overpriced culinary gadgets are finally on sale. But put down that copper pot. Step away from the Vitamix. And rethink that Instant Pot. Your counter space is too precious to spend that much money on things that you'll probably never use! Although, I do have some more useful recommendation, if you still think that you might want an all-purpose cooking contraption or fancy 19th century kitchen. Plus, nothing on this blog is sponsored. I just don't like it when people waste money on cooking fads. NAME ONE PERSON WHO ACTUALLY USES AN AT-HOME PRESSURE COOKER.
