I tend to think of salads as being boring. After all, aren’t they what you eat before a meal to feel better about the decadent meal that you’re about to have?

They’re typically a starter or side course when eating out that’s drenched in bulk ranch dressing. Or the thing that you eat to make you feel better about eating an enormous amount of gravy for Thanksgiving. Maybe one of those sides drenched in mayonnaise during a summer barbecue? That ones that are really just mayonnaise disguised as something edible!?

While ranch drenched calorie drain and I don’t even know if we can legitimately call ambrosia or potato salad an actual salad, I do in fact eat a lot of salads! I just don’t make what you would typically consider a side or appetizer dish.

Generally speaking, a salad is any cold dish that’s served with a dressing or dip.

Knowing me, this oftentimes means making something that’s large enough to be a meal in and of itself. It’s packed with enough protein to be filling and flavorful enough to be worth it.

It’s like someone flipped a switch and it’s all of sudden fall. The leaves have started falling. Rain has set in. The scent of nutmeg is in the air. I just started putting out Halloween decorations. And I found myself picking up an entire bushel […]

I have been making a bunch of rice lately. But fall is in the air. The leaves are changing. It’s been raining.. And I am breaking out the skeleton bones, ghosts, and ghouls. But I also have the last of my peppers still ripening! And […]

Rice is one of the most commonly eaten foods in the world and is a staple for in much of the globe’s diet. I tend to make a big batch of rice at least once a month and eat it for countless number of meals. […]

Salad w/ Catfish, Calabaza Squash Rice, & Avocado

October 28, 2021

This catfish salad is just as delicious as it looks. And I can’t quite believe that it’s taken me this long to make catfish! Living in rural Wisconsin these days, there is a plethora of catfish available in the area. I’ve heard mixed reviews about […]

Brown Rice w/ Ambercup Squash & Red Chilis

September 30, 2021

I almost never make rice in my rice cooker. Ironically enough, quinoa and lentils cook up much better and are far easier meals to toss together. Rice often ends up too thick or thin, too moist or dry, and just relatively unpleasant. Part of the […]

Quinoa w/ Daikon, Walnuts, & Lime

September 16, 2021

I was perusing the grocery store this morning. Not my local grocery store, but my favorite out of the way grocery store with the best unusual produce. Now, daikon isn’t the most out there of ingredients! But I do live in rural Wisconsin and my […]

Salad w/ Quinoa & Queso Fresco Peppers

September 12, 2021

I have anaheims ripening in the garden. I’m quite fond of anaheims. I more commonly stuff queso fresco and/or quinoa in larger peppers. But I prefer the flavor of anaheims! Obviously enough to have grown quite a few in my porch garden. So, that is […]

The Fundamentals of Making Quinoa

August 15, 2021

Quinoa is one of my favorite staple foods. It’s one of those things that you can throw together in an hour and eat throughout the rest of the week. I routinely make it for salads, alongside eggs, in burritos, and with curry. As much as […]

Quinoa w/ Sweet Potatoes, Tomatoes, & Walnuts

August 15, 2021

I’m incredibly fond of making sweet potato quinoa. It’s one of the staples in my culinary world. I almost always have some sitting in my refrigerator to toss into burritos, alongside eggs, or mix into a salad. It’s particularly good with walnuts, though. Which isn’t […]

Top 5 Overrated Kitchen Gadgets NOT Worth Buying

Top 5 Overrated Kitchen Gadgets NOT Worth Buying

I hear what you're saying. The holidays are upon us. The overpriced culinary gadgets are finally on sale. But put down that copper pot. Step away from the Vitamix. And rethink that Instant Pot. Your counter space is too precious to spend that much money on things that you'll probably never use! Although, I do have some more useful recommendation, if you still think that you might want an all-purpose cooking contraption or fancy 19th century kitchen. Plus, nothing on this blog is sponsored. I just don't like it when people waste money on cooking fads. NAME ONE PERSON WHO ACTUALLY USES AN AT-HOME PRESSURE COOKER.
