I tend to think of salads as being boring. After all, aren’t they what you eat before a meal to feel better about the decadent meal that you’re about to have?

They’re typically a starter or side course when eating out that’s drenched in bulk ranch dressing. Or the thing that you eat to make you feel better about eating an enormous amount of gravy for Thanksgiving. Maybe one of those sides drenched in mayonnaise during a summer barbecue? That ones that are really just mayonnaise disguised as something edible!?

While ranch drenched calorie drain and I don’t even know if we can legitimately call ambrosia or potato salad an actual salad, I do in fact eat a lot of salads! I just don’t make what you would typically consider a side or appetizer dish.

Generally speaking, a salad is any cold dish that’s served with a dressing or dip.

Knowing me, this oftentimes means making something that’s large enough to be a meal in and of itself. It’s packed with enough protein to be filling and flavorful enough to be worth it.

The other day I had a batch of rice and beans lying around and decided to make mashed potatoes. They were initially entirely unrelated culinary endeavors. But, I didn’t really have a plan for the mashed potatoes. It’s just starting to look like winter and […]

The other day I made Mexican Rice for Enchiladas and have been hooked. I don’t often make actual rice in my rice cooker. As much as I like rice, it’s kind of boring. It’s easy to overcook or undercook or have burn to the bottom […]

I’ve been making a lot of really big meals lately. I’ve been in kind of a cooking rut this summer. Although that does tend to happen when things get busy and I don’t have the time and/or the energy to come home from a long […]

I am in full on apple mode lately. The other day I went apple picking and now have an abundance of apples to go through in a very short time! I’m also not much of a sweets person and do not particularly like making pastries. […]

I have a problem hoarding dried goods. If rice or beans or flour is on sale? I’ll come home with a fifty pound bag. I have bags upon bags upon buckets of dried goods. I might be set in case of economic collapse or the […]

Fall is in the air and you know what that means: it’s bean season. Not really, bean harvesting season is in midsummer to early autumn. And, while there are plenty of people who grow or may otherwise have access to fresh beans? Most of us […]

Top 5 Overrated Kitchen Gadgets NOT Worth Buying

Top 5 Overrated Kitchen Gadgets NOT Worth Buying

I hear what you're saying. The holidays are upon us. The overpriced culinary gadgets are finally on sale. But put down that copper pot. Step away from the Vitamix. And rethink that Instant Pot. Your counter space is too precious to spend that much money on things that you'll probably never use! Although, I do have some more useful recommendation, if you still think that you might want an all-purpose cooking contraption or fancy 19th century kitchen. Plus, nothing on this blog is sponsored. I just don't like it when people waste money on cooking fads. NAME ONE PERSON WHO ACTUALLY USES AN AT-HOME PRESSURE COOKER.
