Category: Appetizer/Side

The term “appetizers” for me encompasses everything from starters to side dishes. These may be distinct categories on a typical menu. However, when you look at it, there aren’t really that many differences between the two. And the terms ar3 often be used interchangeably.

If you have French fries or cheese curds before the meal, it’s an appetizer. But does that mean that you can’t also have them on the side of an entrée with a burger or fish fry?

Whether something is a starter or a side dish is largely arbitrary. And mostly determined more by when you eat something. Rather than what you’re eating.

Thus, I have bundled starters and side dishes into the same category. I leave it up to you to determine where exactly in the course you want to place your appetizers!

Roasted Red Kuri Squash Slices

November 23, 2023

We are getting into squash season! Which is my favorite time of year. As exciting as it is that the leaves are changing and the smell of pumpkin spice lattes is in the air? What I’m actually looking forward to is all of the squash […]

Roasted SnapDragon Apple Cubes

November 19, 2023

I went apple picking the other day and now have an abundance of apples to use up before they go bad! And I’m not a big fan of sweets. So, I’m determined not to actually make a pie in this endeavor. I picked up 5 […]

I know that I’m going to make Enchiladas w/ Pinto Beans, Mexican Rice, & Roasted Potatoes. Ordinarily, I would make enchilada sauce. However, I’m feeling a bit lazy at the moment. After all, I did just make Slow Cooker Pinto Beans w/ Habaneros & Garlic, […]

Crema w/ Sour Cream, Heavy Whipping Cream, & Lime

November 2, 2023

I can’t say that I have any experience with “authentic” crema. It’s one of those things where there doesn’t seem to be a lot of consistency across recipes. Although I’m always trying to recreate the flavor of it baked on top of the world’s most […]

The Fundamentals of Sautéed Potatoes

November 1, 2023

Quite frankly, I don’t want to explain how to cook potatoes every time that I use them in a recipe. Potatoes are kind of like scrambled eggs where, once you know how to do it, you don’t really need an explanation every time. “Sauté potatoes” […]

Slow Cooker Pinto Beans w/ Habaneros & Garlic

October 29, 2023

It’s officially fall and you know what that means: It’s pepper season. Peppers are a fall harvest crop and one of my favorite things to grow. It might take all summer for them to ripen in my climate, but it’s well worth the effort when […]

Sautéed Yukon Gold Potatoes w/ Red Ember Peppers

October 19, 2023

I don’t always make sautéed potatoes their own recipe page. I tend to break up recipe into multiple pages when things are a little bit more complicated, when it would help to have a little bit more clarification, and/or when the recipe would just be […]

Blackened Cod w/ Cumin, Coriander, & Smoked Paprika

October 19, 2023

I like a good blackened tilapia. It tends to be my go-to for blackened fish. They tend to be a readily available fish at a good price in my area. Especially if you’re picking them up in bulk. This isn’t sponsored, but my local Costco […]

Slow Cooker Black Beans w/ Red Ember Peppers

October 19, 2023

I’ve been excited about black beans lately. They’re quick and easy to toss together (15 minutes to throw into a crock pot and then 8 hours to slow cook). No need to soak them overnight or fuss with simmering them on the stove (unless you […]

The Fundamentals of Roasted Pumpkin Seeds w/ Jack-o-Lanterns

October 15, 2023

Jack-o-lantern season is upon us. It only comes once a year. You can only tromp out into the mud six weeks out of the year. You can also go to the grocery store. It’s not exactly a Christmas tree lot-sized spectacle. But you know that […]

Top 5 Overrated Kitchen Gadgets NOT Worth Buying

Top 5 Overrated Kitchen Gadgets NOT Worth Buying

I hear what you're saying. The holidays are upon us. The overpriced culinary gadgets are finally on sale. But put down that copper pot. Step away from the Vitamix. And rethink that Instant Pot. Your counter space is too precious to spend that much money on things that you'll probably never use! Although, I do have some more useful recommendation, if you still think that you might want an all-purpose cooking contraption or fancy 19th century kitchen. Plus, nothing on this blog is sponsored. I just don't like it when people waste money on cooking fads. NAME ONE PERSON WHO ACTUALLY USES AN AT-HOME PRESSURE COOKER.
