Category: Appetizer/Side

The term “appetizers” for me encompasses everything from starters to side dishes. These may be distinct categories on a typical menu. However, when you look at it, there aren’t really that many differences between the two. And the terms ar3 often be used interchangeably.

If you have French fries or cheese curds before the meal, it’s an appetizer. But does that mean that you can’t also have them on the side of an entrée with a burger or fish fry?

Whether something is a starter or a side dish is largely arbitrary. And mostly determined more by when you eat something. Rather than what you’re eating.

Thus, I have bundled starters and side dishes into the same category. I leave it up to you to determine where exactly in the course you want to place your appetizers!

Marinated Apples w/ Tamari & Apple Cider Vinegar

November 18, 2021

I knew that I was going to make Ahi Tuna Steaks and was looking for some kind of accoutrement. I made Quinoa yesterday with fresh apples, red chilis, apple cider vinegar, and tamari. All of which would pair well with Sesame Crusted Tuna. So, I […]

Peanut Sauce w/ Tamari & Thai Chili

November 11, 2021

In the very last throes of summer produce, I have a couple of Thai chilis. So, what better way to use them than for spring rolls with a spicy peanut sauce? Now, Thai chilis might not be in the more classic of peanut sauces. But […]

Slow cooker black beans are incredibly simple to make. We sometimes like to think that beans just come out of cans. But they’re far easier to make at home than most people realize! You really just throw a bunch of produce and beans into a […]

Brown Rice w/ Calabaza Squash & Anaheim Peppers

October 24, 2021

I made Brown Rice w/ Ambercup Squash & Red Chilis the other day. It was one of those recipes that was absolutely delicious and a game changer for my seasonal rice recipes! I tend to do this. I tend to make different types of rice, […]

Avocado Dip w/ Japanese Eggplant & Tahini

October 17, 2021

I have, from no will, desire, or planning of my own, ended up with a Japanese eggplant. It was free. It was handed to me in a, “You cook, right? Here you go!” kind of way. So, now I’ve ended up with this eggplant that […]

Enchilada Sauce w/ Thai Chilis & Cherry Tomatoes

October 17, 2021

I didn’t start out intending to make enchilada sauce with Thai chilis. I planted a bunch of different peppers this spring, but we’ve had a particularly odd summer season! It snowed in April and we had frost well into May. Summer didn’t really seem to […]

Slow Cooker Black Beans w/ Calabaza Squash

October 17, 2021

Slow cooker black beans are one of my favorite fall dishes to make, just as fresh produce is starting to ripen. Today, I have a ten pound Calabaza Squash that I just roasted up and can’t wait to cook into black beans! Calabaza squash has […]

I’m not a big fan of mayonnaise. I make quite a few recipes without it. A lot of the time you can just omit the mayonnaise entirely and not really miss a beat. But, mayonnaise is a critical ingredient of tartar sauce! Without it you’re […]

The Fundamentals of Slow Cooker Black Beans

October 1, 2021

I am a big fan of slow cooker black beans. It might take 8 hours to make. But it’s an entirely hands off version of cooking beans that doesn’t mean that you have to soak them overnight or watch a pot slowly simmer for hours! […]

Top 5 Overrated Kitchen Gadgets NOT Worth Buying

Top 5 Overrated Kitchen Gadgets NOT Worth Buying

I hear what you're saying. The holidays are upon us. The overpriced culinary gadgets are finally on sale. But put down that copper pot. Step away from the Vitamix. And rethink that Instant Pot. Your counter space is too precious to spend that much money on things that you'll probably never use! Although, I do have some more useful recommendation, if you still think that you might want an all-purpose cooking contraption or fancy 19th century kitchen. Plus, nothing on this blog is sponsored. I just don't like it when people waste money on cooking fads. NAME ONE PERSON WHO ACTUALLY USES AN AT-HOME PRESSURE COOKER.
