Category: The Fundamentals

There are some basics that I swear by. I hesitate to say that everyone should know how to make them because everyone’s culinary tastes and preferences are shaped by personal experience, region, family ties, and time and place in history. But, if you’re looking to expand your cooking foundation, this is where I would start.

The fundamentals are recipes that I make on a regular basis. They’re my go-tos and the backbone of the vast majority of meals that I make.

The Fundamentals of Homemade Whipped Cream

June 1, 2022

I have to admit that I’m a whipped cream snob. I know that that’s not the most couth thing to say. But there is absolutely nothing better than homemade whipped cream. It’s surprisingly easy to make. All you need is heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, […]

The Fundamentals of Making Omelettes

March 15, 2022

I have been on an omelette kick lately. I tend to do this. I’ll eat food in waves. One part of the year it’s all about soups and curries. Then, I’m turning all of my leftovers into nachos and burritos. Somewhere in between I’ll throw […]

The Fundamentals of Fried Tofu

February 15, 2022

I’m incredibly fond of fried tofu and, rather unfortunately, it’s oftentimes not cooked well. Tofu is not meat. It doesn’t look, taste, or have anywhere near the texture or consistency as meat. So, calling it a “meat substitute” is kind of a misnomer. Especially given […]

The Fundamentals of Making Fondue

February 1, 2022

If I could live off of cheese alone? I would eat cheese for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And there is absolutely no better way to eat cheese than fondue! Fondue is actually a fairly easy dish to make. I consider it simpler than a roux […]

The Fundamentals of Slow Cooker Black Beans

October 1, 2021

I am a big fan of slow cooker black beans. It might take 8 hours to make. But it’s an entirely hands off version of cooking beans that doesn’t mean that you have to soak them overnight or watch a pot slowly simmer for hours! […]

The Fundamentals of Air Fryer Cheese Curds

September 15, 2021

I’m incredibly fond of cheese curds. They’re quintessentially Wisconsin and Costco sells them in multiple pounds around here! But they’re not strictly reserved to the Dairy State. For one thing, California has had superior cheese producing numbers for decades. And I grew up in Oregon […]

The Fundamentals of Barbecue Salmon

September 1, 2021

I acquired a barbecue the other day. Which is really just code word for someone left a perfectly functional grill on the side of the road and I am from Portland, where picking up orphaned furniture is practically a past time. So now, of course, […]

The Fundamentals of Making Quinoa

August 15, 2021

Quinoa is one of my favorite staple foods. It’s one of those things that you can throw together in an hour and eat throughout the rest of the week. I routinely make it for salads, alongside eggs, in burritos, and with curry. As much as […]

The Fundamentals of Making Nachos

July 15, 2021

Nachos are one of my guilty pleasures. I’m almost embarrassed about making them. A lasagna isn’t healthy for you. It may have some tomatoes in it and cudos for eating fruit in something. But let’s be real: lasagna isn’t a health food by any stretch […]

The Fundamentals of Avocado & Greek Yogurt Dip

July 1, 2021

I’m incredibly fond of making avocado dip. It’s my absolute favorite thing this summer. I put it on everything from burritos and nachos to seafood and salads. Late at night I’ll even just dip chips in it as a quick snack! There is truly nothing […]

Top 5 Overrated Kitchen Gadgets NOT Worth Buying

Top 5 Overrated Kitchen Gadgets NOT Worth Buying

I hear what you're saying. The holidays are upon us. The overpriced culinary gadgets are finally on sale. But put down that copper pot. Step away from the Vitamix. And rethink that Instant Pot. Your counter space is too precious to spend that much money on things that you'll probably never use! Although, I do have some more useful recommendation, if you still think that you might want an all-purpose cooking contraption or fancy 19th century kitchen. Plus, nothing on this blog is sponsored. I just don't like it when people waste money on cooking fads. NAME ONE PERSON WHO ACTUALLY USES AN AT-HOME PRESSURE COOKER.
