Articles for day in the life of Catfish Out of Water. Everything from my personal everyday adventures. To keeping plants and animals alive. And practical advice for everyday cuisine and fine dining.

A lot of people use food and lifestyle blogs to put their best food forward. It’s tantamount to food porn. It’s idealized and oftentimes a Photoshopped renditions of the world. But it isn’t entirely reality.

I use this Articles section of the blog to talk about the real struggles with food and gardening. I talk about the dishes that are important to me. And the origin of food and how that shapes my perspectives on it.

But more than anything, I utilize this section to chronicle my life. To share my experiences with growing fruits and vegetables, oftentimes in a minimal space without a yard. As well as my life and cooking in and around having a full-time job and a home filled with pets. And in terms of my relationship with food, from where it began to where it can go.

Culinary TikTok! I Have Mixed Feelings…?

February 15, 2022

I resisted TikTok. During the throes of the pandemic when everyone was on Cat TikTok or Culinary TikTok? I wasn’t really paying all that much attention. I’m not really a social media kind of person. I don’t like the practices of the companies who control […]

The Fundamentals of Making Fondue

February 1, 2022

If I could live off of cheese alone? I would eat cheese for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And there is absolutely no better way to eat cheese than fondue! Fondue is actually a fairly easy dish to make. I consider it simpler than a roux […]

Top 5 Tips for Cooking w/ Pets & Other Distractions

January 1, 2022

No one cooks in a bubble. I work full-time, typically double shifts surrounded by 550 degree ovens. I have not one, not two, but three pets. And I fein to have a social life. As I’m assuming that most people tend to! These are my […]

Food Styling & Unrealistic Expectations of Recipes

November 15, 2021

As a general rule, I don’t like to edit my images and I am firmly against alteration of images in food blogs. It’s not something that we generally think about when it comes to recipes! But food styling, editing, alteration, and even faking entirely is […]

What’s the Difference Between Types of Rice?

November 1, 2021

Rice is one of the most commonly eaten foods in the world and is a staple for in much of the globe’s diet. I tend to make a big batch of rice at least once a month and eat it for countless number of meals. […]

Top 5 Tips on How to Keep Lettuce From Wilting

October 15, 2021

How to keep lettuce from wilting, or using all of it before it wilts, is oftentimes a futile task. It’s part of the reason that I don’t really like buying lettuce. I live alone. I only feed myself. And I don’t eat a single head […]

The Fundamentals of Slow Cooker Black Beans

October 1, 2021

I am a big fan of slow cooker black beans. It might take 8 hours to make. But it’s an entirely hands off version of cooking beans that doesn’t mean that you have to soak them overnight or watch a pot slowly simmer for hours! […]

The Fundamentals of Air Fryer Cheese Curds

September 15, 2021

I’m incredibly fond of cheese curds. They’re quintessentially Wisconsin and Costco sells them in multiple pounds around here! But they’re not strictly reserved to the Dairy State. For one thing, California has had superior cheese producing numbers for decades. And I grew up in Oregon […]

The Fundamentals of Barbecue Salmon

September 1, 2021

I acquired a barbecue the other day. Which is really just code word for someone left a perfectly functional grill on the side of the road and I am from Portland, where picking up orphaned furniture is practically a past time. So now, of course, […]

The Fundamentals of Making Quinoa

August 15, 2021

Quinoa is one of my favorite staple foods. It’s one of those things that you can throw together in an hour and eat throughout the rest of the week. I routinely make it for salads, alongside eggs, in burritos, and with curry. As much as […]

Top 5 Overrated Kitchen Gadgets NOT Worth Buying

I hear what you're saying. The holidays are upon us. The overpriced culinary gadgets are finally on sale. But put down that copper pot. Step away from the Vitamix. And rethink that Instant Pot. Your counter space is too precious to spend that much money on things that you'll probably never use! Although, I do have some more useful recommendation, if you still think that you might want an all-purpose cooking contraption or fancy 19th century kitchen. Plus, nothing on this blog is sponsored. I just don't like it when people waste money on cooking fads. NAME ONE PERSON WHO ACTUALLY USES AN AT-HOME PRESSURE COOKER.
