Articles for day in the life of Catfish Out of Water. Everything from my personal everyday adventures. To keeping plants and animals alive. And practical advice for everyday cuisine and fine dining.

A lot of people use food and lifestyle blogs to put their best food forward. It’s tantamount to food porn. It’s idealized and oftentimes a Photoshopped renditions of the world. But it isn’t entirely reality.

I use this Articles section of the blog to talk about the real struggles with food and gardening. I talk about the dishes that are important to me. And the origin of food and how that shapes my perspectives on it.

But more than anything, I utilize this section to chronicle my life. To share my experiences with growing fruits and vegetables, oftentimes in a minimal space without a yard. As well as my life and cooking in and around having a full-time job and a home filled with pets. And in terms of my relationship with food, from where it began to where it can go.

Apple Picking & What to Cook All Fall Season

December 15, 2023

I went apple picking for the first time in my entire life. This might sound strange because I’m from the Pacific Northwest. I’ve lived in Washington. I grew up 5 hours away from Wenatchee, which I have never heard of because it’s in the middle […]

December 1, 2023

We don’t always think of food as being faddy. After all, everyone needs to eat. And while, fad diets are certainly a thing, kitchen essentials can’t possibly come and go in fashion with quite the same rampant irregularity. Can they? Unfortunately, yes! Kitchen essentials gadgets […]

Top 5 Overrated Kitchen Gadgets NOT Worth Buying

November 15, 2023

There are plenty of entirely overrated kitchen gadgets out there. Magic Bullets, immersion blenders, and blenders just in general come to mind. They’re things that you see plenty of people swearing by. But, when you actually end up with them at home? Inevitably end up […]

The Fundamentals of Sautéed Potatoes

November 1, 2023

Quite frankly, I don’t want to explain how to cook potatoes every time that I use them in a recipe. Potatoes are kind of like scrambled eggs where, once you know how to do it, you don’t really need an explanation every time. “Sauté potatoes” […]

The Fundamentals of Roasted Pumpkin Seeds w/ Jack-o-Lanterns

October 15, 2023

Jack-o-lantern season is upon us. It only comes once a year. You can only tromp out into the mud six weeks out of the year. You can also go to the grocery store. It’s not exactly a Christmas tree lot-sized spectacle. But you know that […]

The Fundamentals of Easy Alfredo Sauce w/out Butter

October 1, 2023

I’ve been making this kind of “cheat” or “easy” Alfredo sauce. I’ve never posted it because it’s more of a lazy day recipe when I don’t want to make a full pasta dish. And it dawned on me that other people might be in the […]

The Fundamentals of Macaroni & Cheese

September 15, 2023

Macaroni and cheese is hands down one of my favorite things to make. During the winter and cold, blustery times of the year, I make macaroni and cheese at least once a month. Once you get the hang of making a roux, it’s a simple […]

The Fundamentals of Stuffed Peppers

September 1, 2023

I’m a big fan of stuffed peppers. They’re great as a side dish, on salads, mixed in with eggs and potatoes, cooked inside of burritos, really the sky is the limit! There’s a plethora of different peppers, cheeses, cooking methods, and recipe inspirations to choose […]

Top 5 Ways to Change Recipes to Make Your Own

August 1, 2023

When I first started out cooking, I’d come across a recipe where there would be an ingredient or two that I didn’t have or didn’t recognize at all and I’d think I can’t make that. But cooking is a lot more forgiving than it might […]

The Fundamentals of Cheesecake Crust

June 15, 2023

People like to say that Graham Crackers make the best cheesecake crust. And, while this is a classic way to go, it’s not necessarily my favorite cheesecake crust out there. It’s a solid choice. It’s great for kids. Although there are other cookie options! Personally, […]

Top 5 Overrated Kitchen Gadgets NOT Worth Buying

I hear what you're saying. The holidays are upon us. The overpriced culinary gadgets are finally on sale. But put down that copper pot. Step away from the Vitamix. And rethink that Instant Pot. Your counter space is too precious to spend that much money on things that you'll probably never use! Although, I do have some more useful recommendation, if you still think that you might want an all-purpose cooking contraption or fancy 19th century kitchen. Plus, nothing on this blog is sponsored. I just don't like it when people waste money on cooking fads. NAME ONE PERSON WHO ACTUALLY USES AN AT-HOME PRESSURE COOKER.
