“And the award goes to… the other guy”

Well hard work sure does pay off, doesn’t it? Yup, PieLab was nominated for the uber prestigious James Beard Foundation Award for Outstanding Restaurant Design. Not only is this a mega-deal on its own, but we were up against the Wright Cafe in the Guggenheim Museum and Choice Market in Brooklyn. Both so obviously had multi-million dollar budgets to work with and not to mention, professional architects. To us it was merely laughable to think we’d be put up against these establishments. As far fetched as it seemed to be nominated for this award, all of us involved could not have been more proud and honored with all the attention it brought to PieLab and the little town of Greensboro.

Dan and I both knew what an amazing opportunity it would be to attend the awards ceremony in NYC. All the celebrity chefs in attendance and fancy food made it near impossible to pass up. I was lucky enough to have the greatest mother in the world who helped us raise the funds to pay for our tickets and airfare. My mother was quite the slave to the stove the month prior, making batches of pecan brittle and toffee to sell to her friends. Let’s just say all the work she did went above and beyond. Thanks mom!

When we arrived in NYC, we checked into our hotel room and started dressing in our finest black tie attire. People, the butterflies were uncontrollable. It was the most frightening thing to me to think that I would soon have to make a thank you speech if we had won the award. We arrived at the event, checked in and were immediately brought to the red carpet. It was seriously the most EXHILARATING moment ever. That most likely will never happen in my life again… ever! I don’t think I’ll even get to see the photos that were taken, being the complete opposite of a celebrity. At least I have these headless photos that my world renowned photographer mother took!

As we walked in, my eyes were all over the place looking for my favorite stars on food network. There were so many restaurants set up with amazing food and drinks but I was way to nervous to eat anything! We took our seats and prepared for the event. Alton Brown was the host that evening and he was quite entertaining. Our category wasn’t until near the end so we had a lot of anticipation the entire time. When it came time to announce our category, I was squeezing Dan’s hand the entire time. It was pretty much all a blur to me at that point, as if the room when silent. It was really awesome to see the work we did up on the big screen and announced by Lidia Bastianich. When I realized that the award went to the Wright, first thought in my now calm mind was “let’s eat!”.

We spent the rest of the evening enjoying the greatest and most innovative food I’ve tasted. Check out the photographs of the food here. It’s food porn, seriously. Great cocktails as well. It was so incredible mingling amongst chefs like Tom Colicchio, Jaques Pepin, Mario Batali, and Frank Stitt. Yes, I was star struck a little.

All in all, I am in no way disappointed with not winning the award. To be nominated is just as big as an accomplishment for us. I am so proud of everyone involved in the project.

Another recap and my explaination for never writing…

So it seems that I went from posting here once a day down to once a month, if that. Well I’ve been thinking about this for some time now. Why don’t I post anything? My mother is always telling me that people keep asking what I’m up to, and quite frankly without updating my blog it’s hard to let people know. My time here is going by so quickly that it’s easy to forget to reflect on my days. Have I been that busy? Well yes at times, but I’m sure I could take five minutes from my day to write. So much has happened with PieLab in months we’ve started it. It’s incredible to see how it’s blossomed into a successful business and community space. As we inch our way out of debt, we are starting to get some out of town recognition. We’ve had reporters from several public radio stations interview us as well as for an upcoming article in Southern Living Magazine. One of our greatest accomplishments yet has to be our $12,000 reward for the Design Ignites Change grant from Adobe Worldstudio. The grant is to start up a business with the YouthBuild students making and selling pecan butter and brittle. We’ll be working alongside the students teaching them about business plans, marketing, and the affects of design. It’ll be such a great opportunity for the kids to start a business from the ground up. Just this year we’ve had a very successful Open Mic Night, that pretty much broke all boundaries of social and racial segregation that I’ve yet seen in this town. It was truly amazing to see the laughter and excitement from the crowd that night. Just this past weekend PieLab and YouthBuild collaborated with the Blackbelt 100 Lenses Project and curated an amazing gallery exhibition of photography from local high school students. We had live music and the largest crowd I have seen in PieLab to this day. This Tuesday we’ll be starting our first of 6 ballroom dance classes. One of our most loyal customers Charles the barber arranged everything for us! I guess it’s great that this space is now turning into something that locals can into their own hands. I hope we get a good showing for the classes.

Well now that I’ve given a bit of an update of what’s been happening here, I’ll get into the reason that I believe I neglect this blog so much. So before this year started up we though that this would just be a year on sabbatical from our design jobs and our life in New York. More and more everyday we fall even more in love with what we are doing, the relationships we’ve built with our co-workers, friends, and students. Alabama has felt more like home to us than anywhere else we’ve lived. I don’t know what it is about this place, but part of me doesn’t ever want to leave it for good. Alabama is a beautiful state and it doesn’t get enough positive recognition. I no longer think of the time I’m spending here as being an experimental year in my life. This is my life, my job (if I can even call it that) and I don’t want to leave this place when my grant is up. I hope that my position can be renewed so I can spend more time with what I’m doing. I couldn’t even imagine leaving PieLab after a year after all of the effort we’ve all put into it. I want this business to thrive and I want to continue to be a part of it as it grows. So I’ll leave you with that and maybe I’ll have something else to say by the time April rolls around.

What makes the south so great

So today I thought I’d take the time out of my busy day to reflect on conversation I had with a customer this morning. It stuck in my head how right on point this woman was with what makes living down here so special. This morning I met Mrs. Madison and her husband. This was their first time in PieLab so I went through the whole PieLab intro as usual and asked a little about them. They’ve come to live in Hale county for about 5 years now. Mrs. Madison told me that previous to moving here she has lived in New York, places including Long Island, Queens and the Bronx. it’s always so intriguing to find others who’ve migrated here from New York City. I was curious as to how they felt about living in Alabama. Her words were, “I love it. Down here, the pace of things allows for you to have time to enjoy your life. In New York, you get so distracted that its hard to see the simple things that make life so great.” I couldn’t have said it better myself. Thank you, Mrs. Madison. I hope you enjoyed your apple pie.

Catch up

It’s been quite a while since I’ve posted. My bad. Let’s see, what’s happened since I’ve returned from Christmas Break? Well, M-Lab has it’s first intern Britney; Britney arranges a presentation on recycling in hope to get the town of Greensboro to recycle; I willingly attend church for the first time; Amanda and Robin have their first business incubation meeting; Colonel Ramsey turns 90; Barbara Ramsey loves my black bottom pie; Greensboro gets snow flurries; Pie Lab hosts their first movie night; Bike Lab acquires a rent-free building; and I prepare for tomorrow night’s Modern Woodman of America event in which I will be catering for 50 people.

Makes sense? No? Okay good. I’ll try harder next time.

Comfort and joy

After a long day of travels and layovers, I was happy to land down in Connecticut. I was greeted by a familiar “Welcome to New England” sign and my tearfully joyous mother. It’s so nice to be home. I spent a quiet night indoors, warm and away from the 25 degree weather. I woke up this morning to the blinding light of glistening white snow and two of the most perfect Christmas Trees ever. I miss this place. It never feels like the holidays until I am home with my family baking cookies.*Sigh*

Homeward bound

I departed this morning at 5:30 with Ryan, Willy, and Haik to Birmingham. After dropping Ryan off the rest of us had a few hours to kill in Bham. Started off with some pancakes in Five Points and coffee and tea at Urban Standard. Soon enough I’ll be on a plane bound to Baltimore then Hartford. I can almost smell the snow.

Open Mic

Archie and Jeff are in town and scheduled an open mic night event in PieLab. What a great night filled with local musical talent. We had a duo from Greensboro who play the blues, they played most of the night. Willy and Ramell jumped in with them playing the bucket drums and the bass. We also had a clarinet player, a Youth Build student on the guitar, and a special guest appearance (via iChat) from Serah Mead in San Francisco. She surprised us with not a performance but a wonderful video of Theresa Burroughs of the Martin Luther King Safe House here in town. Thanks to all who participated. It was a great night and we hope to arrange one again in the future.

I’m a professional now

A few weeks back I took a one day course/exam to be certified for safe food service. I passed with a 93% and just got my certificate in the mail today! How exciting! This’ll look pretty on my food resume. It lasts for 5 years so it would only be wasteful to return to a job that sits behind a computer right? I think so. This afternoon we had a family come in for Orange Beach, AL which is down on the gulf coast. This couple owns a restaurant down there and the wife is a pastry chef who complimented my crust! Whew! It was nice to have some foodies not only try but enjoy my baking. I love my job.

Admirer

I must have made this man’s day. I sold him a cup of coffee with a smile and he bought me Christmas presents. Thanks, Jerry.
